Access Without Barriers
Disability Rights And Accessibility Nonprofit / Berlin, Germany
Über uns
Access Without Barriers is a disability-led civil-society organization working to remove the physical, digital, administrative, and attitudinal barriers that restrict participation. It supports disabled people, people with chronic illnesses, neurodivergent people, and families navigating inaccessible services, work, education, housing, transport, healthcare, and public life.
The organization is grounded in the social model of disability: people are often excluded not only by an impairment or health condition, but by environments and systems designed without their needs in mind. A step-only entrance, an inaccessible website, an inflexible workplace, unclear communication, or a benefits process that assumes unlimited energy can each create avoidable dependence and exclusion.
Access Without Barriers provides rights information, peer support, accessibility reviews, training, referral guidance, and advocacy tools. It helps individuals request reasonable accommodations, document access failures, prepare for meetings, and identify specialist legal or benefits advice. It also works with employers, municipalities, cultural institutions, healthcare providers, and community organizations to improve accessibility before a complaint is made.
The organization emphasizes that accessibility is not a checklist applied at the end of a project. It must shape procurement, budgeting, communication, staffing, event planning, software design, emergency procedures, and governance from the beginning. Its work therefore combines individual support with structural change.
Access Without Barriers also challenges the assumption that disabled people are only service users. Disabled people are workers, leaders, parents, artists, researchers, organizers, and experts in the systems they navigate. The organization’s broader goal is to create conditions in which disabled people can make decisions about their own lives and participate fully in the institutions and communities that affect them.
