Cookie Policy
What we store on your device, why, and how to control it. We try to use as few cookies as possible and never use them for advertising or cross-site tracking.
1. What this policy covers
This Cookie Policy explains how Knowledge Commons e.V. uses cookies and similar technologies on the platform. It is provided in accordance with § 25 of the German Telecommunications-Telemedia Data Protection Act (TTDSG) and the EU ePrivacy Directive.
For information about how we process personal data more generally, please see our Privacy Policy.
2. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to recognise your device and store limited information about your preferences or actions. Similar technologies include local storage, session storage, and pixel tags.
3. The cookies we use
We group cookies into four categories. Only the first category is set without your consent, on the basis that it is strictly necessary to deliver the service you have requested.
| Category | Purpose | Examples | Consent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Login session, language preference, security and fraud prevention. | kc_session, kc_lang, kc_csrf | Not required |
| Functional | Remembering filter settings, layout preferences, recent searches. | kc_filters, kc_recent | Required |
| Analytics | Understanding aggregate usage. We use Plausible Analytics, hosted in the EU, with no cross-site tracking. | plausible_* | Required |
| Embedded media | Set by third-party players (e.g. PeerTube, Vimeo) only when you actively load embedded media. | varies by provider | Required |
4. Managing your consent
The first time you visit, a banner asks for your consent to non-essential cookies. You can accept all, reject all, or choose by category.
Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal. Some functional features may be unavailable if you decline functional cookies.
5. Browser controls
You can also manage cookies directly in your browser. Most browsers allow you to block all cookies, block third-party cookies, or delete existing cookies.
6. How long cookies are kept
- Session cookies
- Deleted when you close the browser.
- Persistent functional cookies
- Up to 12 months.
- Analytics (Plausible)
- Up to 24 months, in aggregate form only.
- Embedded media providers
- As stated in the third party's own privacy policy.
7. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when we add or remove technologies or change the lawful basis for processing.
