Über uns

Digital Dignity Lab is a civil-society organization working to protect rights, safety, and participation in digital environments. It supports people affected by online harassment, privacy violations, non-consensual sharing, impersonation, discriminatory automated systems, platform failures, and exclusion from essential services that have moved online.

The Lab was founded on the recognition that digital harm is rarely confined to a screen. Online abuse can affect employment, housing, education, relationships, physical safety, mental health, and participation in public life. At the same time, people are often expected to navigate complex reporting systems, preserve evidence, secure accounts, and understand data law while already under pressure.

Digital Dignity provides practical guides, digital-safety clinics, referral pathways, training, and policy analysis. It helps individuals assess immediate risk, document abuse, strengthen account security, communicate with platforms, and identify when legal, psychosocial, or law-enforcement support may be necessary. Its work is trauma-informed and does not assume that leaving a platform is always possible or desirable.

The organization also investigates structural problems in technology. These include opaque moderation, biased automated decisions, inaccessible interfaces, manipulative design, excessive data collection, and public services that exclude people without devices, stable internet, digital confidence, or standard identity documents.

The Lab publishes explainers on privacy, platform governance, digital evidence, automated decision-making, and access to online services. It also supports community organizations in developing safer communication practices, minimizing the personal data they collect, and preparing for harassment or account compromise before a crisis occurs.

Digital Dignity collaborates with youth organizations, anti-discrimination groups, legal advisers, researchers, journalists, and public institutions. Its broader goal is not simply to teach individuals to protect themselves better. It seeks digital systems in which safety, accessibility, privacy, explanation, and meaningful appeal are built into design and governance from the beginning.
