The Institute for Social Insight is an independent research organization that studies inequality, migration, social cohesion, civic participation, public trust, and access to essential services. Its purpose is not only to produce research, but to make evidence understandable and usable for civil-society organizations, community leaders, journalists, public institutions, and people directly affected by the issues being studied.
The Institute was established to bridge the gap between academic research and public action. Important findings are often locked behind technical language, expensive publications, or methods that non-specialists are expected to accept without explanation. At the same time, poorly interpreted statistics and isolated anecdotes can shape public debate in misleading ways. The Institute addresses both problems by publishing clear summaries, methodological notes, data explainers, evidence reviews, and practical guidance on how research should—and should not—be used.
Its teams combine quantitative analysis, qualitative interviews, participatory research, and program evaluation. The Institute works with community organizations when defining research questions and interpreting findings, particularly where research concerns groups that have often been studied without meaningful influence over the process. It treats lived experience as a source of knowledge while maintaining clear standards for evidence, uncertainty, and causal claims.
The Institute also supports nonprofits in designing surveys, evaluating programs, improving data collection, and communicating findings responsibly. It emphasizes data protection, informed consent, transparent limitations, and the risk of reproducing harm through careless categories or deficit-based narratives.
Its broader goal is to strengthen public reasoning. Rather than using research to close debate, the Institute helps people ask better questions, identify what is known, recognize what remains uncertain, and make decisions that are proportionate to the available evidence.
